The NHL has been lauded for the most part for their 2010 Playoff ads. What a lot of people don't know however is that the league has been releasing viral marketing ads for some time now. Viral ads as most of you know are when a company uses social media to raise brand awareness.

This marketing strategy has failed miserably as i'm sure this is the first you've heard of it. That doesn't mean the ads weren't any good though.

I don't usually take political stands here at Bloge Salming. For the most part I don't believe there is any room in sports for politics.

But upon learning Graham James had been pardoned by The National Parole Board of Canada I can't say I was anything less than shocked.

Shock was soon replaced by sadness. I felt bad for Theo Fleury and Sheldon Kennedy. I felt bad for a couple of my friends who had a hockey coach who molested them when they were kids. I kept thinking about how they must all feel when a story like this breaks.

Then I got angry.

I have been a fan of Don Cherry since the 1980s. While others have made a living criticizing him. I have spent the better part of the last 5 or 6 years defending him.

They said he was going senile. That he was an aging dinosaur who's only mission it seemed to them was to further the agenda of knuckledraggers everywhere.

I really didn't see the decline until this past season.

Last weekend was the debut of the 2010 NHL Playoff commercials, and so far they have been off to a very solid start. Much has been talked and written about the classic look and feel of the spots.

Here are the first two:

"What if Bobby didn't fly?"

And number 2 is "What if Mario wasn't so super?"

There has been much speculation as to what events the next 4 spots will be about. A rumour spreading is that the commercials will focus on Ray Bourque winning the Cup, Patrick Roy winning the cup in his rookie year, Steve Yzerman's overtime goal winning slapshot and Mark Messier's cup winning guarantee. A much smaller debate has been growing over what media outlet should be the one to showcase the next two commercials. Will it be CBC again? Or perhaps NBC? Maybe it will be a plucky blog in it's first year of existence that gets the nod...

I'm gonna go with the last one.

The NHL on NBC Promo

The NHL has been criticized in the past about it's handshake deal with NBC. It has been widely rumoured that the station doesn't pay a dime for the rights to broadcast NHL games. And yet when it comes to calling the shots on start times for playoff games...NBC seemingly pulls rank on CBC. CBC only pays millions of dollars for the exact same rights here in Canada.

You can't blame a Canadian hockey fan for feeling like the proverbial boyfriend who's girlfriend is constantly flirting with the guy with Pearl Jam tickets (I swear this didn't happen to me....more than once). So you can imagine my shock when NBC asked Down Goes Brown and I to create an ad they planned to run in the US to educate their fans on the Canadian hockey teams.

Ummmm...let's just say the idea sort of runs off the rails at a certain point. And that's just the beginning.

Btw...if you're not reading Down Goes Brown at this point I can only assume you've hit your bandwith limit with your internet provider.

EXCEED YOUR LIMIT....it's worth it.

We all love the story of redemption. No one encapsulates coming back from the brink better than Bob Probert. A man that was once so drunk and high that the country he was born in refused him re-entry. What we often don't hear are the heartfelt moments when the abuser has to go back and apologize for all his wrong doings. This is often referred to as the ninth of the twelve step program.

Although I admire Bob's courage I can't help but think he missed the point of the exercise.

A Missed Opportunity By The NHL???

I apologize for my lack of posts in February. I wish i could say I was doing something productive but.....well....I can't. So instead I will try to win back your heart with my first post of the month.

Many felt that the NHL lost out on an opportunity when it didn't run a commercial during the NFL's Superbowl. I did a little a digging and found out that they indeed put something together for the show but were usurped by this ad.

To the NHLs defense...they are strikingly similar.

Start Of A New Era in Carolina

Rod Brind'Amour was always my idea of the perfect captain in the post lockout NHL.

It was with shock and then understanding that I learned that the Carolina Hurricanes replaced Brind'Amour as captain with Eric Staal.

Then I got over it and ate some Frosted Corn Flakes...damn that shit is good.

I wouldn't have started thinking about the Carolina situation again had a blogging buddy from Raleigh not sent me a video of the whole meeting.

It went a lot differently than what was reported!

Let's hope Brind'Amour does better than Jay Leno after passing the torch...

Ok, well...this weekend just plain sucked.

When I was a kid (the Leafs sucked then too btw...) I would escape a Leaf loss by watching the Saturday morning cartoons. The fantasy world would take me away to a place where John Brophy wasn't a legitimate NHL coach and the Tom Kurvers trade never happened.

Because todays cartoons are terrible I started going over my old VHS tapes and came across a cartoon I don't ever remember seeing.

I was astonished at what I saw....and that the VHS was in 720p!

Every company has a Christmas party...mine resulted in getting drunk and throwing up in my bosses coat sleeve.

These last few years have been lean economic times and even the mighty MLSE has had to scale back on the Christmas cheer.

The moral of the story is I ran into DGB in a mall parking lot this weekend. We insulted each others mothers, started a fist fight, got drunk and then hashed out this video as a peace settlement.

Brian Burke has been been reportedly looking high and low to recoup the draft picks he gave up in the Phil Kessel deal. One option mentioned is for the Leafs to take on a bad contract and as payment receive a draft pick. All this has been rumors and hearsay...

...until now.

I don't write very much on this blog. The reason is, quite frankly I suck at it. But I thought now would be a good time to write one. I don't know...the timing just seems right.

Not too long ago my parents dropped off a letter that had been mailed to their house. It was mailed to me and the name of the sender had me reaching back in my memory bank to place where I knew it. Then it hit me. It was my grade 2 teacher from back in grade school. Quick math would have me back in grade 2 around 1984-85 or so, the year Toronto came in last place and drafted Wendel Clark. Curious, I opened the letter and upon reading the contents I burst into fits of laughter. It read out as such:

Q: What are your interests in 1984?

A: The Toronto Maple Leafs and boobies.

That's it. That's all that was written.

For you see in 1984 my teacher had us write our interests down on a piece of paper and then he put it in a time capsule that wouldn't be opened for 25 years. He would then send us the contents in 2009. The letter in my hands was the contents.

My interests in 1984 revealed 2 things.

One is that my interests haven't changed much in 25 years.

The other is that I was a Leaf fan then, I have been a Leaf fan for 25 years and I will continue to be a Leafs fan until the day I die.

And did I mention that I'm interested in boobies?

How The Lockout Was Won.

There has reportedly been a documentary being filmed based on the NHL lockout of 2004-05. Many questions linger on the origin of the salary cap and how the owners were able to score such a decisive victory.

With the current CBA about to expire and the very real possibility of another work stoppage, I felt it was important to look back on this important chapter of the leagues history.

You know what they say..."In order to see the future, we must understand our past".

Or some shit like that.

Not having had my fill of dissapointment for the night I entered a video into a contest for a chance to win $15,000.

Rejected CBC Opening Night Promo...

A tape recently fell into our laps here at Bloge Salming. The tape is an Opening Night montage video that CBC created for use before the Montreal/Toronto game.

The video was shown to a test audience beforehand to gauge if the appropriate emotions were being drawn out.

Apparently it failed miserably.

One attempt to salvage the season was a closed door meeting in which it was believed Brian Burke spoke a few words to the team. This is noteworthy because it's a commonly held belief that General Managers often leave that sort of stuff up to the coaches.

The Myth of Wendel Clark and Bob Probert.

There has been a long standing rumour that Wendel Clark never fared well in his fights with Bob Probert. I don't know where it started but I will attempt to destroy this myth today.

December 27, 1986

Merry f'in christmas! Wendel rings in the New Year by ringing Probert's bell in repeated fashion. My favourite part of this video is Probert's face when he gets punched...an obvious bi-product of cocaine/vodka/hookers.

This fight comes after Probert's much publicized return to Canada for drug possession charges. Wendel welcomes him home.
